Key takeaways
- Market profile organises price by time spent at each level, showing where the market found value.
- TPO stands for time price opportunity: one mark for each 30-minute period that traded at a price.
- Key levels are the point of control (most time traded), the value area (roughly 70% of activity) and the initial balance (the first hour).
- Where price opens relative to the previous day's value, and whether it accepts or rejects new prices, helps build a directional bias.
What market profile is
Market profile was developed by J. Peter Steidlmayer at the Chicago Board of Trade in the 1980s. Instead of plotting price against time left to right, it stacks activity sideways at each price, so you can see the shape of a whole session at once: where trading was busy, where it was thin, and where the market agreed on value.
What a TPO is
TPO stands for time price opportunity. The session is split into periods, usually 30 minutes, each given a letter. Every price traded during a period gets that period's letter. Stack them up and you get a distribution: wide where the market spent lots of time, narrow where it moved through quickly.
The levels to know
- Point of control (POC): the price with the most TPOs, where the most time was spent. It often acts like a magnet.
- Value area: the range containing roughly 70% of the session's activity, bounded by the value area high (VAH) and value area low (VAL).
- Initial balance: the range of the first hour of the main session. Breaks of it often tell you who is in control that day.
- Single prints: prices that traded in only one period, showing a fast, one-sided move. Price often revisits them.
- Poor highs and lows: flat, untested extremes that suggest unfinished business.
How traders use it
Building a bias
Where the market opens relative to the previous day's value area is a useful first clue. Opening inside value suggests balance and rotation. Opening outside it, and holding there, suggests the market is looking for a new value.
Acceptance versus rejection
If price moves to a new area and starts building time there, the market is accepting those prices. If it pokes in and snaps back, it's rejecting them. That distinction helps separate real breakouts from false ones.
Levels to trade from
The POC, value area edges and single prints give objective levels for entries, stops and targets, which you then combine with your timing rules.
TPO profile vs volume profile
A TPO profile measures time at each price. A volume profile measures the number of contracts traded at each price. They often agree. Volume profile needs reliable central volume data, which is why it's most common on futures. TPO works on any market because it only needs time and price.
Limitations
Market profile describes what happened and where value is. It doesn't predict on its own, and it works best alongside context: the economic calendar, the bigger trend and a clear set of entry rules. TPOs and market profile are one of the nine modules in the GRIT curriculum.

Quick answers
What is the difference between a TPO chart and volume profile?
A TPO chart shows how much time price spent at each level. Volume profile shows how many contracts traded at each level. Both reveal where the market found value, and they often line up.
What is the value area in market profile?
The value area is the price range that contains about 70% of a session's activity. Its upper and lower edges, the value area high and low, are commonly used as reference levels for the next session.
Can market profile be used on forex?
TPO profiles can be used on any market because they only need time and price. Volume profile is less reliable on spot forex because there's no central exchange volume.
